New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and Music Director Xian Zhang

Music Director Xian Zhang

Acclaimed for her connection with musicians and audiences, Xian Zhang serves as Music Director of the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra through the 2023–24 season.

The Star-Ledger/NJ.com wrote of last season’s opening program: “Under her baton, Zhang made both lasting music, from the ‘Ode to Joy’ to the national anthem, as well as [Kate] Whitley’s new piece, sound vibrant and relevant right now.” Zhang will become the principal guest conductor of Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in 2020. She is conductor emeritus of Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, following a hugely successful period as music director from 2009–16.

Chester sisters deployed with U.S. Navy during holiday season

ARABIAN SEA (NNS) -- This holiday season the Asdal family celebrated Christmas in the states without three of five siblings.

The three Asdal sisters who missed Christmas dinner at home in New Jersey are deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations, the region connecting the Mediterranean and Pacific through the western Indian Ocean.

Lt. Cmdr. Ashley Asdal O’Keefe, the USS Lassen (DDG 82) combat systems officer, Lt. Lindsey Asdal Beates, the future operations officer for Combined Task Force 57, and Lt. j.g. Charlotte Asdal, the USS Farragut (DDG 99) gunnery officer, are all celebrating the holidays thousands of miles from home, but quite close to each other. By pure happenstance, the three sisters, who serve at three different Navy commands stateside and abroad, spent the holidays supporting the nation while deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet and the U.S. Naval Forces Central Command area of responsibility. While O’Keefe was underway, embarked on USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75) for Christmas, her two other sisters in U.S. 5th Fleet celebrated Christmas day together on liberty in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

What we are doing

The Garden State Woman Education Foundation (GSWEF- 501c3) has created a new initiative, GOOD DEEDS. Donations can be made on www.gswoman.com. We have a fantastic new project that needs seed money, as does our unique college scholarship program.  So, please, help us go forward. Giving is intrinsic to our American way of life. It is the DNA of our human spirit. Thanks.

Powerful Women of Color Lend Voices In New Anthology

All the Women in My Family Sing: Women Write the World — Essays on Equality, Justice, and Freedom.

Women of color have long been silenced even while social movements have flourished. All the Women in My Family Sing amplifies the voices of women and shows what it means to be a woman of color in today's world. Sixty-nine authors, including America Fererra and Samina Ali, lend their voices to broaden cross-cultural understanding and to build bridges to eachothers' histories and daily experiences of life.

This new book from Nothing But The Truth Publishing, LLC is an anthology documenting the experiences of women of color at the dawn of the twenty-first century. It is a vital collection of prose and poetry whose topics range from the pressures of being the vice-president of a Fortune 500 Company, to escaping the killing fields of Cambodia, to the struggles inside immigration, identity, romance, and self-worth.

Contributors include America Fererra, Samina Ali, Natalie Baszile (Queen Sugar), Porochista Khakpour (Sons and Other Flammable Objects), Lalita Tademy (Cane River), Mila Jam, Marian Wright Edelman (Children's Defense Fund), and many more.
